Some times I get a scripture stuck in my head and I seem to hold onto that handful of verses for quite a while. Then it will be laid on my heart that I just have share it. So, that is what this blog post is about. I promise I will try really hard not to make a sermon out of it.
The verse I have stuck in my head is from Revelation 3:20 “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.” This is something that, for some reason has had me in awe that last couple weeks. I think the reason I am so taken back by this verse is because of some of the things that are going on right now in our community. It seems that people want nothing more than to be heard and accepted. Yet here is the Son of God, part of the Trinity, the creator of the universe, asking to come in. Jesus never bullies his way in, He never jumps up and down and yells. He simply ask to be part of your life. Jesus is standing outside the door asking to come in and have a relationship with you.
Here’s the thing that gets me. Jesus, in all of his power and might and glory, wants so badly to come in the door and be part of your life. But YOU have to open it. Jesus will not demand you accept him. He will not belittle you, or force his ways on to you, or make you do anything. But, what’s so amazing is that as you open the door a little more and more to let Jesus into your life a little more you want to change and do things his way. You desire to hear what He has to say. You change because you don’t want to disappoint the person that took the punishment that you should have gotten.
I guess, with all the people today, yelling so that we will hear what they have to say, the idea that someone with so much to say quietly and calmly knocks on the door to ask to come in and tell you something. Not by yelling or screaming, but out of love and grace. And Jesus knocks on the door not because it benefits him, but because he loves YOU and he wants your life to be better. Jesus went to the cross and took that punishment, but still wants to find a way to make your life better and more full of love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. He has no secret agenda, just his love for you. And that is what I stand in awe of. That all the creator of the universe wants is for me to have a better life. So, get up go open the door and let him in, because he wont push the door down, you have to open it.
